On the Frida Kahlo "makeover"
In December 2012, a dude using the name “toonsketchbook” (he either deleted his blog or changed his url) created the Frida “makeover” repaint.
I reblogged the picture and added a comment condemning it.
Buzzfeed picked up the post and quoted my comment and the comments present on my particular reblog. They used my url as the “image source.” I began getting hate mail (some of it incredibly nasty). Because I didn’t know why people were coming to my blog, I deleted the post hoping that would stop the hate mail, but it just makes it look even *more* like I’m actually the artist because people can’t see that it was a reblog. (Not that that prevented people from thinking that I was artist in the first place, but it definitely made it worse.)
Recently the websites Colorlines and Cosmopolitan have rehashed the Buzzfeed article because apparently they were hurting for material or something…anyway, I’ve been getting a lot of messages from people who think I created the picture and want to let me know just how terrible I am. If you came here for basically that purpose a) please don’t because I did not make that picture and b) could you please add a comment on whatever site brought you here saying that I’m not the artist and also please send me a message if you came through a site other than Cosmopolitan, Colorlines, or Buzzfeed so I can try and contact them to clear things up?
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
UPDATE 11/20/2013: the Brazilian website Bemparana.com.br has picked up the story claiming I added a comment I did not add. The quote they used was the artist’s original statement. I added a comment calling it racist and offensive. I think some detail got confused in translation.
